 Conor McGinn

Conor McGinn

MP for St Helens North

Conor McGinn was elected as the Labour MP for St Helens North in 2015.

He has a reputation as a campaigning and community-focused MP, speaking up in Parliament for his constituents and fighting for increased funding for our NHS, schools, police and local transport. He has attended hundreds of community events across St Helens North and his full-time constituency office has helped thousands of local people resolve issues like housing, social and health care, universal and pension credit and the impact of anti-social behaviour.

Conor has worked hard to attract jobs and investment to St Helens as well as supporting local businesses. His mantra is “let’s make St Helens borough the best place to live, work, visit and do business in the North West.”

He has a lifelong connection to the trade union movement and has fought for justice for miners’ pensions. He is a patron of the St Helens Worker’s Memorial Trust.

Conor has been a strong supporter of the campaign for Helen’s Law, introducing a Private Members Bill and successfully getting the Government to commit to introducing tougher penalties for murders who refuse to reveal the location of their victims’ remains. He also successfully changed the law to extend equal marriage for LGBT people to the whole of the UK.

Before entering politics he worked in mental health, public health and as the Director of a charity working with prisoners and their families.

Since being elected he has served as an Opposition Whip and on the Defence Select Committee. He is currently a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and a delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

He is the Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Coalfield Communities; Horse Racing; Darts; Ireland, and Honorary Secretary of the APPG on Music.

He is married to Kate and they have two young children, and live in Newton-le-Willows. He regularly goes racing at Haydock Park, enjoys live music and real ale, and is a parishioner at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Earlestown.
