I was privileged to be elected Member of Parliament for Birkenhead in December 2019. I have worked hard to fulfil my election commitment of turning the town’s fortunes around and building a better Birkenhead - cleaner, greener and attracting investment, jobs and prosperity.
I was born and bred in Birkenhead. My father was a shipwright on the docks, my mum worked at Cammell Laird Shipyard, and my brothers served their time there too.
I left school – St Hughes – and my first job was in the Merchant Navy, working on the Blue Funnel line. After a few years at sea, I joined Vauxhall Motors. I worked at the plant for nearly 40 years, becoming a trade union convenor there. I became a trade union organiser and later was privileged to serve as Northwest regional secretary for Unite the Union.
I have been a Labour Party member and trade unionist all my adult life and regard my election as an MP as the chance to be Birkenhead’s voice in Westminster – not the other way around.
