I’m an experienced Labour member, supporter, activist, campaigner and councillor and am currently Norfolk’s Labour Lead for Children and Young People and spokesperson for People and Communities.
I have twice been elected as a Borough Councillor and as a County Councillor in 2017 – where my seat was the only one in Norfolk to be won for Labour from UKIP and not taken by a Tory. I proudly stood as parliamentary candidate for Great Yarmouth in the 2017 General Election – spearheading a short campaign in which we increased our vote by 3,000. As County Councillor I am the elected Chair of the Labour group and as a Borough Councillor I am a junior whip. Within my CLP I am Vice Chair for my branch, sit on the EC and have also held the position of political education officer.
I have campaigned across the whole of the constituency from Repps and Filby to Hopton and Belton and worked as joint campaigns co-ordinator leading on the effective Save our Children’s Centres, Save Alderman Swindell and Cuts Have Consequences campaigns. I’m a visible and approachable member of my community running regular ward walks, community litter picks as well as weekly door knocking sessions. I am also on the committee of PoNY (People of North Yarmouth) and Great Yarmouth Town Football Club.
I’m an active member of Unite the Union and have proudly supported colleagues from Unite and other unions, including the FBU, Unison and the RMT in their respective campaigns. This year our Unite branch led Great Yarmouth’s first ever Pride parade.
For the past 25 years I have worked in education most recently in developing, managing and delivering community based training programmes.
I care passionately about accessible education and am the Norfolk County Labour champion for lifelong learning. As co-founder of two national award winning accredited training providers I have helped address the needs of local people by providing quality and sustainable learning opportunities. In many cases these have supported some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of our community.
Alongside my councillor roles, I run a successful community gardening scheme and local allotment project – which support local people back into employment and training. I’m a keen volunteer and am a member of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service National Selection Committee. I have held the post of Community Development Manager for Great Yarmouth Town FC and am an experienced school governor.
In 2017 I received an MBE for my work within education and the community and in 2018 received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of West London.
I’m a proud Dad of a wonderful family – and love living and working in Great Yarmouth. My interests include art, local history, design, football, film and architecture. I also present a monthly show on Harbour Radio FM – which enables me to indulge in my passion for Indie music.
