My name is Sonia Barker and I am standing to be your next MP. My roots in Waveney run deep as I have lived and worked here for over 35 years. I am married with a daughter, she was educated in Lowestoft, and was lucky enough to benefit from the excellent Connexions youth support and guidance service which once existed in the town. As a teacher who gained her Open University history degree whilst working and a former NHS advocate, I have gone on to inspire a generation of Waveney pupils in Lowestoft and Beccles.
My public service includes being a Governor at Pakefield High School and a supply teacher. As a District, County Councillor and Labour Opposition Spokesperson for Education & Skills I was involved in the successful campaign to stop Tesco taking over the Tramway Hotel in Pakefield and as Chair of the Waveney Overview & Scrutiny Committee I ensured that education outcomes in Lowestoft improved.
My style is to look for ways of bringing people together which garnered £150,000 to improve traffic safety measures at a local primary school. By working with businesses, charities and local authorities I was part of the team that created the successful Lowestoft Summer Festival.
Under this Tory Government, we have seen services axed, police numbers dwindle, and NHS services difficult to access. I am concerned that in Bungay and Beccles and surrounding rural areas the elderly and disabled are isolated, broadband access is poor and bus routes are cut because they aren’t deemed profitable enough. House prices and private rents have increased, and council budgets have been slashed. I will be an MP for Waveney and I will fight with all my might for policies which will prioritise green jobs, and increase funding for both the NHS and education. You and I, and our families deserve better. I have a deep passion for improving the lives of everyone who lives here in Waveney.
When the time comes, I’m hoping your vote can help me achieve that ambition.
