Personal Statement

I am proud to call Stevenage my home, living just off our high street. I made Stevenage my home, because like many others, I know it's a town that was built on rewarding aspiration and hard work.

But whilst you are working hard, your Conservative MP has been sitting idly by. Out of touch, lost his touch, won't get in touch.

Using my decade of experience as a councillor and armed forces champion, I want to serve you as a full-time MP.

I’m asking residents, whoever they’ve supported before, to look at how we’ve been held back by 14 years on chaotic Conservative governments and lend me your support to help unlock the ambitions of our town again – as a Labour government did when it built Stevenage as one of the first pioneering new towns post WW2.

This year, you will have that chance to vote for real change. To vote to get our future back.

In the meantime, I'm keen to listen to you and focus on your priorities. Here are the missions I’ve set out so far for our town and villages:

TACKLE THE COST OF LIVING CRISIS

Labour will create publicly owned 'GB energy' to drive down bills, require lenders to provide mortgage support and secure the highest sustained growth in the G7

BUILD AN NHS FIT FOR THE FUTURE

Labour will cut waiting lists by doubling medical school places, recruiting 10,000 new nurses and midwives annually, paid for by scrapping the non-dom tax status

CUT CRIME IN OUR COMMUNITY

Labour will recruit 13,000 new police officers and impose tougher sentences to halve violent crime and tackle anti-social behaviour in Stevenage and the villages

TRANSFORM LOCAL TRANSPORT

Labour will hand powers to local authorities to determine new bus routes and set affordable fares, whilst investing in pothole repairs to fix our broken roads

FIX OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM

Labour will drive up school standards, introduce free breakfast clubs, reform the apprenticeship levy and recruit thousands more well paid teachers

But it’s not just the policy that matters, the kind of MP I want to be matters to. I’m making the following personal commitments to every resident:

I will always live locally

I'm proud to live in Stevenage and will always live locally. This is my home.

I will be a full-time MP

I want to serve residents as a full-time MP, meaning I'd never take a second job.

I will put our community first

I will always shop local and will visit as many local schools and businesses as possible in my first term.

I will make parliament for people

I will invite decision makers to our community and set up a school trips to parliament scheme.

I will get your casework completed

I will ensure I have a hardworking team of staff to help me complete casework, hold surgeries and attend local events
